Diary of the Dead: I want -media-brains!
George A. Romero’s Diary of the Dead commentary track is one of the best kind of commentary tracks: it takes you behind the mind of the director and lays out all the ins and outs of the film’s subtext. In this case that subtext is the media; how people communicate, attract followers to their cause, manipulate others into achieving their goals, and the art of talent in relation to technology. You wouldn’t figure all of that would be in a zombie movie but you would be wrong. Indeed most of the track is focused on how the scenes build this kind of network. This isn’t to say that they don’t also talk about cameo appearances, challenges in making a certain stunt or action work, or what-have you, but that a greater portion than normal is given over to the idea which pushes the film forward while the more technical issues are exposed. It is a good balance I believe. For me it made the track very interesting and like I was rewarded for listening to the lead minds blabber on. Per my last recommendation- I would give this commentary two thumbs up.
