I love the Very Short Introduction series. It is like getting a intellectual shot, only instead of whiskey you get knowledge. This installment on life in Anglo-Saxon England is no exception; written curtly and with information which will get straight to the point, it is an ideal place to start for anyone hankering for a piece of historical understanding. Though Blair’s text is just a piece of a larger book (Oxford’s Illustrated History of Britain), it is well worth picking up for the amateur historian and cultural lover.
